Thu, 09/29/2011 - 06:53 M.M. Waist-to-hip ratio and attractiveness in women: addressing confounds

Hi

i know this is a few years old but i just stumbled across it then, i hope you can still help (:

i'm 18, 5'7" [or 169cm] and my measurements are 38B-32-30-38 [bust, just under bust, waist, hips]. my middle isn't very toned and still have some stubborn childhood/teen fat that i can't seem to shift.

i was wondering if you could help me out but telling me which body shape/s i might be, and also and style suggestions? i wear alot of high waisted things with belts that clench my waist but i'm not sure if this look good

many thanks!

Thu, 09/29/2011 - 05:14 Anne What form of women’s body shape was preferred in medieval Europe?

It is highly likely that Botticelli's Venus was modeled by a man as was often practiced at the time.

And I certainly have never heard of the alleged notion that bigger women were favoured in medieval Europe. Never. I have heard that small breasted women were favoured.

I think these people have been mistaken, it is during the 1600s that a more plumper figure was admired - not grossly overweight of course.

I also do not think that Eve is overweight; just poorly drawn. And I believe that medieval society was fascinated with a nubile young body verging upon childish because simply that was when a woman was typically considered a marriage prospect.

Furthermore, Eleanor of Aquitaine was considered beautiful despite her age during the end of her time.

Beauty is the eye of the beholder sure, but there are always those who wish to create an observable trend of the changing female body and link it back to art. I am sure its a place of future study, but I am not sure we can really treat art to being such a reputable source of the study of beauty (as you have said in your above article)

But your article made me wild. Absolutely wild.

I think you are mistaking plump with fat, overweight with obese and other contentions. I suggest you reconsider your own beliefs upon the subject before you make such an argument. I find myself wondering if you had an axe to grind yourself rather than finding your approach enlightening.

We both mention that Art may not be reputable, and so you turn to Christianity? The bible names gluttony as a sin yes but an equally and religious fervent society such as England in the late 1600s found the plumper figure to be beautiful. I think we all know that a lot is said in the bible and many is not taken up, and many beliefs existed at the time that didn't originate from the Bible. Gluttony is not merely of food may I say, even though you may want to be literal to make your argument stronger.

And how possible would it have been then to grow obese? Medieval Europe was typically a place where only the extravagantly rich ate well, and certainly not as well as their predecessors.

What "science" (as in frequently tested in a laboratory) has shown many new researchers about the topic of beauty is that generally the more identifiably female the female is, the beautiful the female body will be to a typical man. So an impossibly small waist (physically impossible) was more attractive than a small waist, and than a normal waist provided the body swung their hips when they were walking. Not to mention this is only generally.

Non-European cultures had a HUGE affect on Medieval Europe. Think of the Crusades and the stories of plump evidently Lebanese women who were often spoken of as beautiful. It is wrong not to include non-European ideas of beauty. Furthermore, Europe is not a singular society. They had differing ideas of beauty; from Spain to the beginning of the Urals beauty had differences.

I suggest you get off your high horse about gluttonous parishners going to burn in hell and learn to spread some understanding.

I would just like to point out that a good majority of your selection of "attractive women" are made to look like adolescent girls. For example, pig tails only make a girl look younger. Fashion models don't have any thing to do with sex appeal, like the pictures you chose, which are pornographic. It's about showcasing the work of the designer. You're a crackpot.

I wish you would answer us Erik.

Erik, I think a great candidate for your attractive women section would be scottish actress Karen Gillan from Doctor Who. She's feminine, beautiful, and *highly* photogenic.

Her co-star Matt Smith more closely resembles the typical female high fashion model than does Gillian, and there's nothing much feminine about Smith.

"With that being said IMO the most attractive female body type for most heterosexual males lies between the runway model and the super curvy women on most adult sites."

And you would be heavily mistaken Tony. Your own wording betrays you misguided theory. "Super curvy women" are what the majority of 10% heterosexual men find most attractive.

You are confusing your own tastes with that of most straight men.

Wed, 09/14/2011 - 16:21 Jade Feminists offended by Tom Ford perfume ad

I don't understand why feminists and that "Thomas" are so angry with Tom Ford. They act as if those women are mere babies who don't think. I remind them that this was their choice and their body. If I saw some promotional items with an "outrageous" ad, I wouldn't care, I would buy that object only if I needed it.

Sat, 09/10/2011 - 10:46 Tony G The 2006 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue

Looking at the SI Swimsuit Issue and Playboy I find that the women while being very pretty are not well built. Bony hips flat buts and poses obviously designed to accent what they lack physically to give the illusion of a curvy figure. And consider adult websites very curvy and voluptuous an many cases. I think the writer on this site has a point. It seams that the main stream fashion industry focus on thin non curvy women. If it were not for the breast and long hair they could pass for young boys. With that being said IMO the most attractive female body type for most heterosexual males lies between the runway model and the super curvy women on most adult sites.

Erik??
you seem to have a lot of opinions about things.

Would you at all mind posting a picture of yourself? It would be most interesting to see what you look like. It is for no particular reason I am just curious and was wondering if I could give you my opinion about whether you fulfill a particular standard for masculinity etc.

You sound like a person who is incapable of acknowledging that you can be wrong or inappropriate. You are blatantly offending both men and woman with this site no matter how much rubbish you write back to them to try to justify yourself.

Even if you wanted to make comments about the fashion industry and how people perceive the ideal woman in that context, you could still consider how entirely biased some of the comments you make about individual woman on this site are. Don't bother writing back some long ridiculous answer as I have noticed you have done to others who have commented on your rudeness. Just send me a picture of yourself and I will tell you what I think.

I bet you won't have courage to send a real photo. But I am sure you can justify that away in your mind. You only make sense to you!

Mon, 09/05/2011 - 09:37 Josseline Cure worse than the disease? The No-l-ita ad: how not to tackle anorexia

I don't believe this is the right way of making us aware of the danger anorexia represents. I was also discussing this campaign with Ryan Deiss and I wanted to say that this action is similar to what happened in "A Clockwork Orange" - they want to cure people with grotesque means.

Do think Amanda Seyfried is feminine?she kinda looks it to me.I also think you should put Megan Fox in the somewhat masculinized section.

Yeah, I would have to concur. These women are not beauty pageant worthy.

Thu, 09/01/2011 - 19:10 Tinkerbell Does Miranda Kerr have a broad nose or am I biased?

Miranda is so gorgeous. I bet many women would pay so much to look like her. The ones who think she is ugly has strange taste. How can someone so beautiful be ugly? You can say that she isn't the most beautiful in the world or she is okay, but ugly? Why? She is no where near ugly. Nothing is wrong with her face. She has perfect facial harmony. No one's nose is perfect, it just has to go with their other features.

Wed, 08/31/2011 - 05:12 Kayla How often men approach women in relation to the size of their breasts

Hey Erik this isnt related to this post but I cannot find a more appropriate place to ask you. Many spas have added microcurrent facials to their list of services. These are electrical currents which cause muscular contractions to tone the face and make it look younger. However I was wondering if u think this would also make the face look more or less feminine. I have had it done many times and immediately notice fuller lips slightly more prominent cheeks especially in apples higher eyebrows and a more defined jawline. I am curious on your thoughts?

Wed, 08/31/2011 - 03:08 Zeeshan-UltraFilter The transsexual parade otherwise known as the Victoria’s Secret lingerie show: part 4

Doutzen is an interesting one. Overall she has a masculine body, which I think is true of a lot of VS models. I think her face is a combination of masculine and feminine, however. Her eyes and the sides of her forehead (which slope inwards) give an effeminate appearance. She also has pouty lips. But her jawline is for sure masculine.

Also it should be noted I think certain "features" have a tendancy to produce exaggerated femininity which does not necessarily exist, like blond hair and blue eyes

.

This picture reveals more(her hair is pulled back so it reveals her jawline more):

I'd love to get Erik's take on her in more detail.
