Bob: People who believe that Gisele is manly and not among the most beautiful women in the world are normal heterosexuals and lesbians like Marguerite, not jealous women. It is not surprising if male homosexuals, who almost certainly count you among them, find Grace to be gross looking and eunuchoid Gisele to be ravishing.

Layla: I am not sure what level of feminine exaggeration in Fig. 2 your face comes closest to, but it appears to be 75% in your comment. The most attractive ratings were for faces with 25-50% feminine exaggeration. 75% feminine exaggeration was still rated as reasonably attractive. I do not know what you mean by women in the Mediterranean region looking more feminine than what is preferred in the West.

Erik:

I appreciate your grouping together these various studies and this page does indeed address the WHR confound concisely.

All things being EQUAL, it seems like a low WHR is considered the most attractive among most people, but it is obviously just part of a total "beauty package" that includes waist size, hip size, weight, overall femininity, and other diverse factors. Therefore, a woman with a low WHR is not necessarily more attractive than one with a more average WHR (perhaps within certain confines) and there is no hard and fast rule about WHR as it pertains to attractiveness.

To that end, I asked a couple of my male "lifetime heterosexual" friends to look at three photos on this site...and they did seem more than willing to critique photos of naked women!

Two women stood out in my mind as having dramatic WHRs...almost shockingly so...Miss Sweden on your Skinny Fashion Models page..and Marika, one of your Attractive Women. I had them compare those two women with Angelina Valinurova, whom I found to be very average in the WHR category. Both men ranked Angelina as more attractive, due mainly to breast size, legs, and a cuter face overall: That's not to say they wouldn't prefer a more dramatic and lower WHR in Angelina..only that Angelina's other features trumped the hourglass figures of the other two women in this particular evaluation.

Your measurements are not adequate, but you likely do not have a long face if your face length, including forehead length, is only a little greater than your forehead width. Here is an entry that shows the outline of various face shapes, which should help you figure out your basic face shape. Alternatively, you can email me your photo; it will only be seen by me and I will not be posting it anywhere.

Anyone who thinks Gisele is manly and not one of the most beautiful woman in the world is jealous. Grace, above, is gross looking. You lesbian chicks needs to stop being jealous.

these are here measurements when she is not in a girdle---
measurements 37D-26-36. the 23 waists from the days they girdled her in. its like how supposedly bridget bardot had a 19 inch waist---only with a girdle. secondly halle berry is def. more slim waisted. 36C-22-37 (Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine) is her measurements when she is more out of shape. for the role in catwoman is was 34c/d-21-35, again according to celebrity sleuth and a host of publications. they love to brag on her stats.

"Becoming Raquel
After a 40-year career as a sex symbol, Raquel Welch has found her true identity.
By Sandra Márquez

Raquel Welch, one of the world’s most recognizable faces, began her career in Hollywood in the ’60s, when Marilyn Monroe was the gold standard of beauty and studio executives tried to persuade the young “exotic” to change her name and lighten her olive complexion and brown hair.
At home, growing up as Raquel Tejada in the affluent San Diego suburb of La Jolla, she confronted another, silent form of white-washing. Her Bolivian-born father, Armando, an engineer who fell in love with America’s promise of modernity, did not speak of his heritage or allow Spanish to be spoken at home.

After a 40-year career as an international sex symbol, a movie star in films ranging from The Three Musketeers to Legally Blonde and as a Broadway performer, Welch, now 62, paused a few years ago to piece together her true identity. She needed answers to help explain her father’s behavior.

Sitting at home, surrounded by family photographs, she spoke candidly about this journey into memory—and her real life trip last August to her father’s birthplace that helped her recover her buried Latin roots."

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 17:04 Erik Is she the next hot Calvin Klein model?

Jen: You, too, have not shown how my arguments are quasi-scientific. You mentioned questionable studies without citing them and describing what makes them questionable. I am not inferring actual testosterone levels based on pictures. However, I have cited enough evidence to tell masculinized women apart from feminine women based on photographic evidence; see, for instance, hormonal data regarding waist-bust proportions and face shape, as well as the feminine vs. masculine page.

If you are a statistician with the CDC, I presume that you are familiar with the necessity of substantiating the claim that an argument is scientifically ludicrous if you make it, rather than just leaving an accusation. Substantiate your criticism.

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 16:25 Erik And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein

Kristin: Your understanding of Christianity needs tweaking. Sincere Christians can be found doing this. It is the intention that is important. Why are the nipples of the woman censored? To induce lust? I am under no obligation to censor the nipples. The purpose is to illustrate the glory of creation, and if the illustrative examples may induce lust in some individuals, then it is necessary to somewhat censor them to make the purpose of posting the pictures clear.

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 16:03 Erik Waist-to-hip ratio and attractiveness in women: addressing confounds

Kristin: It is highly unlikely that a young-adult Halle Berry had a 21-inch waist. Raquel Welch a Mexican? A young Raquel Welch had a reported waist measurement close to 23 inches and she was a few inches taller than Laurie. Please get your facts correct.

Laurie: Your physique is curvy and does not appear to be masculine based on your description. On the other hand, I am reluctant to describe it as an hourglass figure because of your 27-inch waist. Compare your physique to Maria McBane’s, whose pictures I posted here and here. At 5-foot-3, 19-year-old Maria McBane had reported measurements of 36D-22-36, i.e., an hourglass figure, which is evident from her pictures. You do not have to post your pictures here; just email them to me after cutting out/blurring your face; they will be only seen by me, not posted anywhere. Anyway, please note that an hourglass figure is not an absolute requirement for attractiveness/femininity. Once again, notwithstanding lower front-view WHRs, the women in Table 1 look overall less feminine than those in Table 2 above.

Samantha: An hourglass figure is literally approximating an hourglass in front view, i.e., having prominent breasts, sufficiently wide and rounded hips, and a tiny waist plus small rib cage; see Maria McBane’s pictures referenced above and also these rough examples. The top and bottom of an hourglass have the same circumference, but an upstanding hourglass would look the same in different views if you rotate it about its vertical axis, whereas this is not true of a human figure. Therefore, it is not necessary to have same bust and hip measurements in order to have an hourglass figure. A 5-foot-6 woman that is 34D-23-36 would have a more dramatic hourglass look than a 5-foot-6 woman with a 36C-24-36 physique.

Anon: Your hips will become wider. Broad shoulders by themselves are not a shortcoming with respect to attractiveness, which is assessed by overall looks.

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 14:35 Erik Is it possible to objectively compare the attractiveness of women from different populations?

Kristin: Here are the two pictures of Beyonce Knowles that I posted: Pic 1, Pic 2. On the left in both pictures, she looks masculine because of overall face shape, and I am not saying this in reference to European norms. My argument is not that broad nose equals masculine. Just look at masculinized Alessandra Ambrosio, extensively addressed within this site; she has a narrow nose. On the other hand, masculinization does make the nose broader. Knowles’ nose job has helped her look more feminine.

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 14:07 Erik The transsexual parade otherwise known as the Victoria’s Secret lingerie show: part 5

Megan: I am unable to comment on charisma since in not seeing this in the feminine women shown here, it seems that you are inferring charisma based on looks, but it is not clear what precisely about looks is charismatic to you. On the other hand, if the women in the attractive women section mostly look average to you, then please tell me where you live. Women in your city are probably a rich source of feminine and attractive women...I am just trying to imagine how the above average women look where you live; I need to head over there and recruit models.

On the other hand, women and men, on average, rate women’s attractiveness similarly; see point #5 here. Therefore, your point that the masculinized looks of the models can be understood in terms of their selling to women, not men, is not applicable. You are also grossly mistaken about society’s obsession with super-skinny looks; people overwhelmingly find super-skinny looks socially unacceptable. I suggest that you carefully read about why high-fashion models are typically very skinny.

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 13:42 Erik Nonheterosexual vs. heterosexual male preference for petite women: Alessandra Ambrosio vs. Camille

Kristin: Of course, padded bras increase bust size...in clothes; they do not increase the actual size of the breasts. In Pic1 of my previous comment, her breasts are way too large for her, and the padded bras have nothing to do with the large-breasted appearance in so far as the exposed parts of the breasts are concerned. In Pic 2, her breasts -- the exposed parts -- look fake; look closely at the context, i.e., a slender man-faced woman with such prominent breasts...doesn’t look natural. If Pic 2 represents photoshop work, then why didn’t the artist make her breasts look more natural? Regarding fashion models getting implants, the teenage ones typically don’t, but some of those in their twenties, after having already established themselves in their teens, do get breast implants since they have enough status to get away with implants, and the implants will also make them more suitable for lingerie modeling.

Allwomenrock: I prefaced the discussion of “sexy” fashion models by mentioning that there is no nice way of saying that the emperor has no clothes; the argument rests on pictures, not the comments on the pictures. People who would dismiss what is evident in the pictures because of the comments on them are probably wasting their time browsing this site. Please do not belittle this site by saying that it is making fun of women unless they have specific looks. The women spoken of in unflattering terms are some fashion models and beauty pageant contestants, and the unflattering comments are typically nothing more than an accurate description of their looks. To describe unfeminine looks as not feminine is not to belittle unfeminine looks.

Do not conclude, judging by the comments, that most people disagree with me. People disturbed by this site are more likely to leave a comment than those who agree with it.

What do you mean by the “one study” that I included? I have cited many studies to support my contentions. For instance, the paper addressed here, specifically showing that most people strongly prefer faces with above average femininity among women, doesn’t just cite one study, but a meta-analysis, i.e., a synthesis of multiple studies on the subject. I have emphasized “most people” because the aforementioned link refutes your contention that I have not been citing statistics to prove my points.

I agree with you that the fashion industry will choose the kinds of models it wants, but the choices are creating a lot of problems, and at the very least the reasons behind its choices need to be explained to the general public.

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 02:48 Kristin Welcome!

this is interesting. i have never taken the site to be a way to uplift woman, but as a sort of debate on the modern discourse on feminine beauty---where its roots lie, etc. its interesting that most men don't mind the concept of some being more handsome than the other, but the 2pgs of comments are are scattered with worries from women over girls not feeling physically beautiful(even though a true feminist would know that a girl can be hideous and be more worthy than any contemporary)not everyone has to be pretty, just like not everyone has to be funny, smart, agile, etc.

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 02:05 bialia Welcome!

just some questions before i go forever- if we can't define beauty, can you please please please define the terms feminine and masculine, and explain what they mean in relation to each other? and, as you mentioned, what circumstances require what you've called feminine beauty? and why?

Sat, 02/17/2007 - 01:49 Bialia Welcome!

happened across your site. i appreciate that you decry eating disorders. however, your standards of feminine beauty apply to a select few only. women's natural bodies vary greatly, and bone structure and the accumulation of fat is different on different female bodies. there is no "ideal" feminine shape, and women whose waists naturally taper in are not superior or more "womanly" than those with wider shoulders or more prominent cheek bones, or those who happen to measure six feet tall. they come in all shapes and sizes, and plastic surgery, decrease in caloric intake, and outside influence doesn't necessarily play any part in the way they are born at -all.- certainly the fashion industry is at fault for giving preference to a certain type at the expense of others, but in slamming those women (who, don't get me wrong, are still implicated in promoting unreal standards for women) and then "educating" the world in what makes a "proper" women, you're just advocating the flip side of exactly the same coin. the pinups and glamour models you seem to prefer are -not- a preferable alternative to anorexic runway models and actresses.

the problem is not telling women they need to be skinny. the problem is telling a woman that in order to be a "real woman" she should meet -any- arbitrary standard at all. can't you see the problem with that? what are the standards for your gender? how well do they reflect you? how well do -you- reflect -them-?

I have a face that is if to be compared on the line up you provided would be most like the one with u exaggeration towards female features....what was that face rated? plain? how attractive is it...I am a Mediterranean, it seems females there are more feminine looking than preferred in the west...but I am living in USA.

Wed, 02/14/2007 - 04:48 anon Estradiol and face shape in women

Dear Erike,

I would like to know what shape my face is and if this is feminine or masucline. My measurments are;
cheeks from outer corner or eye to other outer corner of eye-14cm
forehead across widest part-15cm
face length-18cm
jawline from one end of the ear measure all the way around to the other end-24cm

I have a square looking hairline so i am assuming my face shape is square. would i be right?

Wed, 02/14/2007 - 03:37 Jen Is she the next hot Calvin Klein model?

Erik, they're quasi-scientific because on MANY occasions you cite research articles of questionable repute and then project their conclusions to your anecdotal evidence (i.e., indicating that women in pictures you posted have certain testosterone levels by their WTR without actually gathering endocrinological data on them).

As a statistician at the CDC I find your method of "proving" your arguments to be not only scientifically ludicrous (see above example) but also reprehensible from a public health standpoint. Not only would they not hold up to scientific peer-review OR editorial review by the likes of Wiley or Oxford they CERTAINLY would not withstand the scrutiny of the MMWR.

While I understand your possible desire to rationalize the current unhealthy ideal of beauty I am disappointed in your ability to actually do so.

Wed, 02/14/2007 - 02:36 Jen Self/body-esteem problems in relation to the promotion of feminine beauty

I showed my husband the picture of all the Dove models in their underwear and he thought ALL of them were attractive. Maybe it was because they're in their underwear. Or maybe because they ARE attractive.

And for the record, my husband is no slouch. He's build like an NFL running back and I often get comments from other women on how good-looking he is.

That being said...I look those Dove models. Always have. Sort of like the second to last one but with red hair (and now with the striations of childbearing on my stomach).

So, perhaps my husband is just one of those guys who likes girls with meat on their bones....

Erik,

I have very broad shoulders, but i dnt know if my hips are narrow. They seem narrow because of my shoulders. I'm 18 and I was wondering if my hips would still become wider. I think I have baby fat in my arms and my waist, and I don't have a very feminine body.

Dear Erik,

I am curious to know what exactly constitues an hourglass figure is it just the bust hip and wasit ratio or is there something more and if so what?

Mon, 02/12/2007 - 23:35 kristin Waist-to-hip ratio and attractiveness in women: addressing confounds

i am a fashion fiend and was referencing standards for a hourglass figuure in clothing manufacturing. also using the waist-hip ratio. ideally that would mean 10inchs or more difference between your waist and hips. 9 inchs is sorta cutting it close. i would assume instead of abb fat--that ou are a slim girl who is slightly broader uptop. another person w/ you measurements is raquel welch---who is very foxy. you really shouldn't dwell on this.
as a side note, she is mexican, and many hispanic women are slighlty broader up top. the same i noticed in germanic/nordic women. again--- they are often very pretty regardless.
halle berry has an hourglas figure at 34-21-35. see the difference?

Mon, 02/12/2007 - 11:55 laurie Waist-to-hip ratio and attractiveness in women: addressing confounds

As kirstins hourglass defintion states: equal hip and bust measurments with a narrow wasit.

If i am not an hourglass figure then what is my figure?

Mon, 02/12/2007 - 11:48 laurie Waist-to-hip ratio and attractiveness in women: addressing confounds

Erik,
My height is 5"3ish inches tall. My Bust is 36in waist is 27in and my hips are 36 in. My bust and hips are the same in inches. Does this not imply an hourglass figure as i thought bust and hips had to be roughly the same with a smaller waist for an hourglass figure? My shoulder width from one end to the other is 14cm. I have thick thighs. Isnt having feminine an hourglass figure? are my shoulders too broad for my height? I do not want to post in any pictures but based on this informationa lone what can you tell me?
